Xetron Loop-Matic Endlos mal anders

Spoiler

What you are about to watch today is not a film scan, but a demonstration of the only known surviving Loop-Matic film handling system in operation.  Research indicates that there were very few of these units ever built, but it is believed all of the others were discarded decades ago.

The system was designed by Famco AG of Vaduz, Leichtenstein.  This particular unit was purchased in 1976 by Fred Schoenfeld of the Commodore Theatre, who paid $11K in 1976 ($57K in today's money!)  Fred has made improvements to the unit and preserved this magnificent display of engineering design over the years, and has now passed on that preservation obligation to us for the future.  This is unit serial #1 and was the prototype.

For the purpose of better understanding how the bi-filar winding works, we have loaded only 2 minutes of film onto the machine (so you can watch it reset multiple times).  The unit however will hold well over 3 hours of film, as Fred ran such titles on this as Titanic and the Lord of the Rings features.  The projector on the right side of the screen is simply there to permit the Loop-Matic to operate for this demonstration.

Unlike a typical large reel/tower system, this one is quite literally an ENDLESS LOOP!  There is never any rewinding, and if the projector is not stopped in between each show, it will simply run over and over and over, as can be seen here in this video.

While the concept sounds great, it was unusually difficult for a projectionist to load a new film onto it and to break down a film off of it.  This is because the entire feature, trailers, snipes, etc had to be wound through a frame counter to find out the total footage of the film to be loaded.  Then the first half of the movie had to be wound heads out on reels while the last half of the movie had to be wound tails out on reels.  The reason for this is because the EXACT CENTER point of the film was on the INSIDE of the roll, and to load up a film required two reels unwinding onto one of these hubs at the same time (again, one of the reels heads out and the other reel tails out).  Once the entire film was loaded, the head AND the tail would be on the outer edge of the loaded bi-filar wound roll.

For the purpose of clarity, here are the official names of the parts:
UPPER WHEEL/LOWER WHEEL - these are self explanatory

REAR COMPENSATOR - this is the elevator of 2 rollers on the left of the machine just before the film feeds out to the projector.

FRONT COMPENSATOR - this is the elevator of 2 rollers on the right of the machine as the film returns from the projector.

MOVING ROLLER - this is the roller attached to the end of the blue colored arm.

MANEUVERING ARM - this is the large black arm that moves up and down to switch between the UPPER WHEEL and the LOWER WHEEL.

FINGER ROLLER - this is a little roller that is mounted on the end of the MANEUVERING ARM.  It pops outward so the arm can release itself from the wheel that the arm has just pulled the film into.  Once the MANEUVERING ARM resets back to its next reversing position, the FINGER ROLLER will pop back inward so it can grab the film for the next switch.

ELECTRO CLUTCH SENSING ARMS - there is one of these thin black arms that rests on top of the UPPER WHEEL's pack of film, and a second one that rides up against the bottom of the LOWER WHEEL's pack of film.  These arms turn a variac as the film roll's diameter increases or decreases.  Those two variacs are what is controlling the torque of the motors.

FILM RETAINER ARM - these are the two shiny silver arms of which their purpose is to ensure the film cannot "cone" outward since this system is effectively 2 large reels with the outer flange not present.

The text of this next paragraph has been copied from the Journal of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers in Dec 1976, which explains how the unit works:

"This accommodates up to 18,500 ft (5640 m) of 35mm film as an endless loop, so that uninterrupted presentation is possible for as long as is required. The principle is known as bi-filar winding, the looped film being wound as a double-layer spiral on one spool. When feeding off, one of the two strands passes to the projector while the other goes to a take-up reel, where it is similarly wound as a double layer with the strand coming from the projector. When the first spool is empty, half-way through the loop length, the second spool becomes the feed and the first the take-up, the changeover from one to the other, the re-formation of the double path and the reversal of the direction of rotation all being completely automatic. Compensator elevators before and after the projector function during the brief period while moving arms transfer the take-up and allow continuous projection at all times."

So ab 1977.

Loopmatic. I

Loopmatic. I I
